We are a group made up of local people interested in making our own art.
Our knowledge and abilities range from the complete beginner to skilful amateurs.
There is no formal teaching; however, with members working across a wide range of media and skill levels, there is always someone willing to offer advice, encouragement, and support. The group currently has over 30 members.
The group meets every Wednesday from 11:00am to 1:00pm, closing only over the Christmas and New Year period.
Venue:
All Saints’ Church Hall
Longedge Lane
Wingerworth
S42 6PU
Alongside the weekly sessions, the group organises:
Demonstrations by professional artists in a variety of media (held several times throughout the year – see the timetable and programme of events for details)
Visits to local art exhibitions and related events
An annual exhibition, which all members are welcome to enter if they wish
The group is run by a committee, elected annually at the AGM. Events such as the annual exhibition are supported and delivered by members who volunteer their time and experience to ensure their success.
The group started in 2022 for all locals wishing to share an interest in painting and drawing regardless of experience or ability. Today we continue with that original idea.

I was fortunate that Wingerworth Art Group (WAG) started just as I retired and I decided to join, despite having done virtually no painting or drawing since leaving school. I thought any skills learnt would help with my woodcarving, which I’d planned to return to on retirement. However, due to the enthusiasm and support of the group I’ve become ever more involved in art work, principally with colour pencils, that I’ve not had time for the woodcarving!
WAG continues to be that welcoming space for anyone, from experienced artist to raw beginner unsure of their ability but who wants to explore what art has to offer.

I discovered my of love art about sixteen years ago and have taken many opportunities to experiment with lots of mediums. Pastels and pencil have become my favourites and I especially enjoy painting people, wildlife and pets. It is exciting to explore new techniques and mediums and a delight to be asked to do commissions.
My belief is that everyone has the ability to be an artist and now, as part of a great art group, I have the chance to encourage others to explore and develop their own artistic creativity and talents.
I am a self-taught artist, having last studied art at school at the age of eleven. Despite growing up in a family of artists, I never believed I could draw or paint.
After retiring just as Covid and lockdown began, I decided to give painting a try — with no expectations and nothing to lose. While my early attempts were far from perfect, I quickly fell in love with the process. Through online tutorials and experimenting with different media, my skills and confidence steadily grew.
Today, I enjoy working across a wide range of painting styles and techniques. I regularly take on commissions and have been fortunate to win several awards.
I joined Wingerworth Art Group a few years ago and value its supportive, welcoming atmosphere. As Events Organiser, I arrange artist demonstrations, gallery visits, and other activities to appeal to a broad range of interests — and I’m always open to new ideas.
